The State of Modding (2014-03-31)
Part 2 in the 'state of modding' series. A short update on a series that has recently been updated, but there are new mod developments that are very interesting.
Nothing has changed as far as I know, however it's only been a week since the last post in this series so it's not surprising.
There are two mods I think deserve special attention this time around. One makes the game much more playable, the other may one day be an excellent tool for spectators.
include KO Deferred
This simple mod adds a 3rd party plugin to knockout, one of the core libraries used in the UI of the game. One of the problems of the core game as it stands is input lag when selecting many units, which is particularly a problem in large games. Apparently the games unit counts can be too much for vanilla knockout to handle. The plugin 'KO Deferred', batches observable updates together and eliminates duplicate updates.
Cola_Colin didn't make the plugin, but finding it and applying it as a mod for the developers to see will likely mean it's integrated into the core game. Anything which transitions from mod to core game has to be applauded.
Sketch Tools For Casters
This mod is a telestrator. For those unaware what that means, think of the software sports commentators use to draw on the screen when killing time at half-time. This mod has serious potential to be a professional, polished tool. Essential for casters.
In a recent cleanup, three mods have been removed, two of which have technically been obsolete for a while.
Countdown before game start
This gave hosters a timer to let players know when a game was about to start. This was made for early gamma when players didn't have a ready button, and hosters could hit ready at any point to instantly start the game.
A key mapping mod by Cola_Colin, which is the successor to oxide246's 'Key Mappings', and the predecessor of proeleert's 'Hotbuild 2'. An impressive lineage, long may it continue.
Made sometime during beta, to make the main menu load quicker. The main menu in beta had a moving star field and fade effects, which made one or two cores of the cpu 100% utilised. This mod made the menu static so it loaded very quickly.
